| The H. & D. Folsom Arms Co., Inc. started with brothers Henry and David (the "H" & "D") and another brother named George. Henry was born in 1829 in Chester, NH. The real start was when they sold arms to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. They grew and had branches in Memphis, New Orleans, Chicago, and New York.
The home office wound up in New York and Henry lived in New Jersey and Manhattan. Henry died in 1887. Apparently younger brother David, born in Derby, NH in 1842 had at some point departed H. & D., graduated from Dartmouth (1867)and went to work for Colt Firearms in New Haven for a bit before going to H. & D. in New York. He died in October 1897, President of The H. & D. Folsom Arms Corp. survived by his wife and a son, David. By 1900 the firm was headed by a Henry Folsom. It was located at 314 - 316 Broadway in New York, a decent and interesting location that was also occupied in 1904 and at other times by Abercrombie & Fitch. The New York Times reported a tragic incident in 1900. Henry and a salesman named Koller, who had worked for the firm for 22 years, were examining a shipment of used pistols they had purchased. One was apparently loaded and Mr. Folsom accidentally shot Koller who later died. In view of a slight change in Henry's original version of events, he was arrested in the afternoon and held at the McDougal Street police station. But not for too long since at 7 PM along came Justus Von Lengerke of Von Lengerke & Detmold, together with a handy Magistrate who set bail at $5,000. It was promptly paid by Von Lengerke who was appointed Folsom's bondsman. The paper reported that before Koller died he gave a statement to the coroner fully exonerating Folsom. Even then, the sporting goods community was a tight knit group. In 1915 the firm was still at the Madison Ave address, with a retail store at 314 Madison and storage in the sub-basement of 316 but suffered significant losses of sporting goods in the basement from a fire. Numerous firemen were treated for gas inhalation at the scene and the fire was indeed dangerous since it almost penetrated a wall to where all the ammunition was stored. |
