Colt 4 x 21 vs. 4 x 20 scope

Both of these scopes, 4x21 and 4x20, were made for 'Colt Optics / C-More' in Japan by Hakko in the late 1990's .  Colt 'branded' this product.

The 4x21 was marketed by Colt Mfg. as being by 'Colt Optics', but they were made in Japan by Hakko.  It was just Colt branding a product with their name on it.  Below is an image of a Colt 4x21 scope with a Colt Optics Blue plastic box.  One picture is worth a thousand words in this case.  There was no Japanese Inspection sticker on either of these scopes below.

Documentation to differentiate a real Colt 4 x 21 scope

The real 4 x 21 Colt marked scope will have the following:

  • There is a space on either side of the 'X' of (4 x 21) on the real Colt. The fakes run the 4, x, 21 together as (4x21)

  • The fake scope uses Phillips head screws on the tube mounting bracket (one forward and one rear on each side) whereas a Colt will have only single-slot screws in the mounting brackets.

  • There is no recessed large screw opposite the windage adjustment on the 4 x 21, whereas on the 4 x 20 and 3 x 20 there is a large screw (both early and late models).

  • The Colt B.D.C knob (top elevation adjustment) is marked 5.56 Range-Meters and is calibrated 100 - 500 meters. There is a large Knurled windage knob on the right side.

  • There is no circled 'R' trade mark after the Colt name on the 4 x 21 just as there is not one after the Colt name on the early 3 x 20 scopes and many others by Colt.

B.D.C adjustment knob: A BDC reticle has scope crosshairs with sub-markings on the downward crosshair. Each one of the extra markings indicates a further distance away. If your scope is zeroed for 100 yards and your target appears to be 300 yards out you can use the BDC markings to line the target up to the second mark for a more accurate 300-yard shot.
