Trepanning Set

Tags: USA Hosp Dept, Hernstein, Surgical Set, Civil War Medicine, trephine, trepanation, instruments

A rare and unusual military trepanning set by H. Hernstein, New York City, N.Y.  This is an earlier, c. 1861 issue, as it is marked with a trade label indicating just H. Hernstein, N.Y. with the 393 Broadway address.  The label also indicates it is U. S. Army Hosp. Dept. issue. Set is marked 'USA'.  There is a sales list on the back of the partition.  The set is 100% complete.  It is key locked, not sliding latches as would be expected for most military field sets, but is again, marked as U.S. Army Hosp. Dept.
